Copy Editing and Layout Services for Crochet Designers
If you're a crochet designer who loves to create new designs but doesn’t enjoy the technical side of putting together the actual pattern, let me help! You send me your rough draft patterns and I will turn them into professional, user-friendly PDFs ready to publish.
What exactly are copy editing and layout services?
The basics: I will check for correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar.
A professional level of formatting consistency: I will check that the pattern contains standard pattern elements as recommended by the Craft Yarn Council (abbreviations, skill level, materials & tools, etc.) I will make sure your terms, phrasing and style format are all consistent. No extra spaces, no clunky word wraps, no missing or incorrect page numbers.
o If you are using a style sheet, I will make sure that the pattern is consistent with it. (I can also help you create your own style sheet. See below for more details.)
I will check your abbreviations: I will make sure they're all correct, and I check to make sure you've defined all abbreviations and any chart symbols you may be using.
I will check your math: I will make sure your charts match your written instructions, check your imperial-to-metric conversions, and make sure any schematics match your stated measurements.
I can format your e-books: If you have a series of patterns that you'd like to offer as an e-book, I can format those for you as well.
I do not do full-blown technical editing, I don’t make sure your stitch counts are correct or that they match gauge, and I’m not going to mentally crochet the pattern to make sure it works.
In addition to those particulars, I may offer suggestions to make your pattern as clear and easy to understand as possible. We both want your pattern to be pleasing to look at and easy to follow!
When the job is finished, I will send you a Word or Open Office version of your pattern as well as a PDF version. That way you can make edits to the file in the future if you decide to make any pattern changes on your own.
Please note that at this point I am only offering these services for crochet patterns.
Copy editing/layout services:
$10 base rate, plus $1 per page for copy editing and layout services. For example, editing/layout services would be $12.00 for a 2-page pattern; $15 for a 5-page e-book.
Please note: If you have patterns that you wish to be edited & formatted for individual sale, and you would like them formatted into an e-book, these are 2 separate projects and both will incur fees. For example, 5 single page patterns edited/formatted to sell individually would cost $15 ($10 base rate + $1 per page); editing/formatting an e-book with those patterns would be an additional $17 ($10 base rate + $1 per page; assumes a cover page, table of contents + the 5 single page patterns in the e-book).
If you have any questions about my fees or would like an estimate, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Payment is due at the completion of the job, before the final files are sent to you. We're not done until you are satisfied with the final product!
Creating style sheets:
·New style sheets are a flat rate of $25.
What’s a style sheet?Basically it is a set of guidelines that you use so that your patterns all have a consistent, professional appearance. Things like the formatting and how you organize your pattern sections, how you word text that appears in each pattern (such as your copyright section), page design, etc.
Why do I need one? A style sheet is a way to make sure that all of your patterns will have a consistent look to them. Deciding on things such as font type and size, text colors for headings and sub-headings, how you will format your pages (1 column? 2 columns?), page numbering, and other layout considerations before you start publishing will help your patterns to be more professional. You won’t be using different abbreviations from one pattern to the next and your repeat customers will look forward to trying your new designs because they are familiar with your style and trust that all of your patterns will be complete and easy to use.
What exactly do I get? When you purchase a new style sheet, we will work together to incorporate your ideas and preferences into a Word or Open Office template for you to use in the future. I will also include a list of all the formatting parameters used that you can use as a checklist (or give to your tech editor if they prefer a list rather than a template).
